In a Living-learning community (LLC), you live in a residence hall with other students who have a common academic interest or shared identity. LLCs also bring you exciting social experiences to enhance your first year of college.

Career Readiness

In 2022, 86 percent of ¹ú²úСßÏÅ®undergraduate students and 48 percent of graduate students participated in an internship.
Student Leadership
Develop skills for future success by engaging with one or some of AU’s hundreds of student-led organizations. You may also develop leadership skills as teaching assistants in the classroom, Ìýliving-learning community program leaders, Ìýor as academic program peer mentors.
Global Experience
Whether you want to immerse yourself in a program, short-term study abroad through your academic program, or service oriented travel through an Alternative Break, globally-focused learning opportunities are available for all students.
Research
Undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students complete research through faculty-guided assistantships, clinics, field work, labs, and more. Whether in the classroom or out, you have many chances for creative and scholarly pursuits.Ìý
In the Community
¹ú²úСßÏÅ®students serve the community through new student activities like Explore DC, and math and literacy tutoring through DC Reads. You may also receive academic credit for service-learning. Our Center for Community Engagement and Service connects you with community-based learning opportunities.

Many classes feature unique experiential learning labs. Using Washington, DC as an extension of the classroom, you’ll have opportunities to visit government agencies, cultural institutions, and non-profit organizations to see real-life applications of what you’ve learned in class.

This course provides students with the essential skills they need to study media technologies, media industries, and the communicative processes they engender. They learn how to analyze news content, scrape and study web and social media data, and conduct interviews, surveys, and experiments to examine media consumption habits and its effects on the public's social and political behaviors. They also develop a critical appreciation for rigorous quantitative and qualitative social research. Experiential Learning is core to this class as students make and build research by survey, interviews, collecting qualitative and quantitative date, audience studies, experimental design, literature review, and other tools and methods in an anthropology type approach to collecting data. Visual Literacy (COMM 105) | SOC | Undergrad | In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven | This course introduces students to ways of understanding visual media through instruction in the fundamental principles of 2-D design, photography, and film/video. Students learn visual theory and immerse themselves in new ways of seeing; understand the impact of images in various forms and contexts; critically deconstruct images created by others while producing images of their own; and come to appreciate the influences of visual symbols on communication. Experiential Learning opportunity includes applying Community Based Research and Learning (CBRL) methodology to a community partner project. Students are required to produce all aspects of this film project. |
Writing for Interactivity (GAME 675) | SOC | Grad | In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven | This course examines storytelling strategies for digital games and other interactive media forms. This is a hands-on course that focuses on story-driven, single- and multi-player experiences in the context of storytelling across media. It introduces students to the design and development of narrative games and media experiences including conceptualization, foundational narrative design strategies, and putting these designs in practice through the authorship and delivery of project-based work. Particular attention is paid to both pre- existing and emergent development practices and technologies, as well as how writing for interactivity relates to more traditional dramatic writing and current research in the field. |
Writing for Visual Media (COMM 282) | SOC | Undergrad | In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven | Techniques of writing scripts for film and television productions. Students write treatments and screenplays for television, proposals for public service announcements, commercials, and scripts for film and video productions. Experiential Learning opportunities include workshops and expert guest speakers to share insight and industry advice with students. |
Writing the Documentary Film (COMM 483) | SOC | Undergrad | In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven | This course emphasizes writing for documentary film, through all phases and for a wide range of documentary genres and styles. Students examine case studies, screen and discuss films, and explore the writing process from idea to treatment, from shooting script to final script. A series of shorter assignments culminates in each student writing a half-hour original documentary script. Guest speakers share their experience with the class. Experiential Learning is core to this course. |
Writing the Short Film (COMM 506) | SOC | Grad | In-Classroom/Curriculuar-Driven | This intermediate course examines the principles of dramatic storytelling as they apply to the short form. The class focuses on structure, characterization, visual scene writing, the development of theme, and how to craft effective dialogue. Students learn through practice by writing short scripts, and by analyzing several short films. Experiential Learning is core to this class. Students develop scripts to use and submit to competitions with acclaim. In addition, this course brings in alumni and industry professionals as guest speakers. |
